High-level group of Energy intensive industries

The European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on Energy-Intensive Industries (HLG EII) was set up by DG GROW to provide a platform for discussion with key stakeholders on the most pertinent issues currently faced by energy-intensive industries. The Group is composed of 11 industry sectors, including Fertilizers Europe, together with 17 member states, unions and NGOs representatives.

Since the publication in November 2018 of the Commission’s Strategic Vision for 2050 “A Clean Planet for All”, the work of the HLG EII has focused on the preparation of an “Industrial Transformation Master Plan for Climate-neutral Industry 2050”.

Three working groups were established to work on specific thematic areas and are expected to present their reports in Autumn 2019.

The energy-intensive industries’ input builds on the report prepared by the VUB Institute for European Studies which outlines the Europe’s Energy-Intensive Industries contribution to the EU strategy for long-term GHG reductions.

Fertilizers Europe together with 146 other industry organisations under the umbrella of the Industry4Europe is actively calling on the EU institutions to put industry on top of the political agenda as well as to commit to a new, ambitious industrial strategy for energy intensive industries.

EU’s industrial strategy should aim at making its industry more competitive, recognising strategic value for jobs and growth, and ensuring that it is fit to compete globally on both short and a long-term basis. It should aim at creating an attractive environment for investment, so laying the foundations of its future competitiveness and prosperity.

Industry4Europe

Industry4Europe is a large and unprecedented coalition of organisations dedicated to campaigning for an ambitious EU industrial strategy.

Fertilizers Europe together with 146 other industry organisations under the umbrella of the Industry4Europe is actively calling on the EU institutions to put industry on top of the political agenda as well as to commit to a new, ambitious industrial strategy for energy intensive industries.

Furthermore, Fertilizers Europe together with other energy-intensive industries (EIIs) was invited by DG GROW to present their collective contribution to the mid-century strategy. A report developed by the VUB – Institute of European Studies entitled “the EU’s Energy Intensive Industries’ contribution to the EU Commission’s Strategy for long-term EU greenhouse gas emissions reductions” was submitted to DG GROW on the 7th September 2018. The report describes a combination of possible key solutions that will help the energy intensive industries achieve significant emission reductions and at the same time remain competitive, innovative and pivotal in enabling the transition to a low-carbon economy.

The European fertilizer industry advocates for a coherent, long-term policy and legislative framework that balances EU’s climate ambitions with industrial competitiveness.
